Episode 89: Heartbreak, Manifestation, and Combatting Loneliness with Naz Perez

Naz Perez is a former producer for The Bachelor turned TV host and founder of Heart Broken Anonymous, a support group for people experiencing loneliness, heartbreak, and grief. You probably know Naz from appearances on The Today Show, as a correspondent on red carpets, or interviewing your favorite celebs (including the entire case of Barbie–yes, we talk about how nice Margot Robbie is IRL). In this episode, Naz shares her tips for getting over heartbreak and finding your confidence again. Josie and Naz also chat about why loneliness is an epidemic, and how she manifested the career of her dreams–turns out Naz is an expert manifester, and gives so many tips for manifesting your dream life too.

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s Ask The Everygirl, Emma and Josie address a listener question about loneliness. Josie explains why she thinks loneliness comes from a disconnection with the self, and how to remedy that disconnection. Emma provides tips for pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone in social situations and getting creative with new ways to make friends. The interview with Naz Perez begins with Josie asking Naz whether she thinks her childhood self would be surprised by her current career path. Naz walks listeners through her personal background and her career ambitions as a kid, and how she relentlessly chased them down after college. She discusses what it was like to be one of few Latina hosts in the hosting space, and to be one of the only women covering what athletes were wearing with her blog back in the day. She walks listeners through her career, from working as a page on Ellen to having a segment on Today with Hoda and Jenna. Naz provides incredible mindset shifts for dealing with career setbacks and navigating problems with motivation and impostor syndrome. Josie asks her the role that manifestation played in her career journey, and Naz shares how human design actually helped her understand more about her high motivation levels. She discusses the importance of having certainty beyond logic about your own future and what you are capable of achieving. Josie and Naz have a conversation about why you need to throw yourself 100% into your life, even when you’re in situations that don’t feel quite right, so that you can build momentum towards your end goals. Then, the conversation pivots to Naz’s project, Heart Broken Anonymous, or HBA for short. Naz explains how she got the idea to create a space for heartbroken individuals to meet and discuss their collective grief, and how she started hosting in-person events in Los Angeles after studying the twelve-step program of AA and NA meetings. She and Josie have a discussion about the different kinds of heartbreak we each experience in our lives, from losing parents to actual breakups to going through the loss of a friendship. Naz explains the loneliness epidemic and why finding community is crucial for getting through heartbreak. Naz and Josie also have a conversation about the stigma against men experiencing and working through heartbreak, and why we need to create space for people of all genders to experience heartbreak and be open about their experiences. Naz also explains why heartbreak is something we have to go through, instead of trying to avoid the feeling. She shares her tips for bouncing back in terms of confidence from a heartbreak. The episode closes with some rapid-fire questions for Naz.
