SHOW NOTES:

For this week’s Ask The Everygirl, Josie and Emma address a listener’s question about how to be present. Emma explains how much she struggles with living in the moment, and Josie provides her advice. She explains that being present has to do with feeling connected to her past and future selves at the same time, and harnessing both of those energies in order to feel satisfied with the current moment. The interview with Dr. Simone Alicia begins with Josie asking Dr. Alicia when she first realized that it was her calling to help other women boost their self-esteem. Dr. Alicia explains that she was teaching elementary school, and she encountered several young girls who were clearly struggling with their self-esteem. From there, she knew that she needed to help women of all ages access their own confidence. Dr. Alicia dives into how many of our self-esteem issues are about a challenge with our personal ability to focus: We give too much attention to the thoughts in our heads that emphasize our faults and question our abilities, instead of giving attention to the things that make us feel empowered. She discusses how she thinks that self-esteem is a matter of neurolinguistic programming, including the things that we see, hear, repeat, and talk about in our everyday lives. Josie and Dr. Alicia have a conversation about how self-esteem is an inside job—it’s not about adding things onto your life in order to enjoy it more, but rather about finding inherent value in yourself and then using that confidence to move into your future. Josie asks Dr. Alicia if she thinks there is a difference between self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence, and Dr. Alicia acknowledges that though the different language may be helpful, in reality, these words all reference the same idea. She also notes that it’s important, in your journey to becoming more confident, to ensure that you don’t develop a god complex or believe that you are better compared to other people. Josie and Dr. Alicia have a conversation about how self-esteem relates to comparison, and that we need to look inward to find true self-esteem rather than finding it by comparing ourselves to other people or worrying about what they think of us. They then discuss how this relates to collaboration and having a sense of community because you are able to feel confident and secure in your relationships when you feel secure in yourself. Josie asks Dr. Simone how self-esteem impacts our lives outside of just our relationships, from our physical health to our job opportunities to our reactions to adversity. The two also have a conversation about the impact of our inner voice, and how crucial your internal dialogue is to your own self-esteem and therefore of what you are capable of achieving. Finally, Josie asks Dr. Alicia for concrete steps to improve your self-esteem, starting with everyday rituals. The episode closes with some rapid-fire questions for Dr. Alicia.
